Chris Connell remembered for his Dawlish to Shaldon row achievements

Steve Astbury commemorated the incredible achievements of Chris Connell in his many years of competing in the Dawlish to Shaldon row shortly before the boats set off the beach to head to the start line of this year’s race.

Chris sadly passed away in May this year, but has left a number of possibly unbeatable records!

Chris first won the Chirney Cup for being the first boat home at the age of 19 in 1979 with James Ashton. This was the first of a total of 19 wins! Between 1988 and 1998 he won it eleven consecutive times with three different rowing partners. Having ‘retired’ from mens pairs he went on to win the mixed pairs in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 Chris and James Ashton paired up again to win, 34 years after their first triumph!

With 130 events there's something for everyone!

Shaldon Regatta is over 200 years old and offers fun for all the family. We have 130 events, many of which are on the beach so even if you're not a rower or sailor you can still take part! There are individual events and team events as well as events for all abilities.

If you are not sure what it's all about just ask one of the friendly committee members at the committee stand or talk to one of the CREW (it's on their shirts) on the beach. We will give you every help and encouragement so you can take part. Don't forget equipment is provided for many events, including rowing, sailing and kayaking.
